PayPal has built up quite a reputation in the industry, especially among computer programmers. They offer a wide range of services from CIM to AIM type checkout processes, and accept every credit card under the sun. They are both a payment gateway and a merchant processor, so I call them the all in one solution.
There tech support is very good on both the payment processing and programmers side of the business.
Personally, I don't care for the product or services, and regret having to support them in our product. I think they have cheapened the industry by providing programmers with already made code to use in their programs, and have no certification program to check and make sure that the programmer implemented the code correctly.
We wrote our own code from the ground up for PayPal Transactions, based off their API Technical Document. We have no plans to certify the program or expand into any other PayPal Services. We did however test our code in all aspects of ecommerce, far beyond the documentation.
PayPal is expensive on first sign-up. It runs about $30 a month, plus 3% in fees, and several transaction fees’ that could add another $3.00 per order. But People feel comfortable using them on checkout.

We've been making ecommerce and shopping cart components for over 10 years now. Most of our products are used in the infomercial industry for payment processing and shipping.
Our goal is to make ecommerce software that is simple and effective, yet powerful in processing and ease of use.
